📚 Sharing vs. Spreading: A Kindergarten Lesson Plan
This lesson plan helps kindergarten students understand the importance of sharing while also learning about how germs spread and how to prevent illness. It combines hands-on activities with simple explanations to make the concepts easy to grasp.
Objectives:
- 🎯 Students will be able to define what it means to share.
- 🦠 Students will be able to identify ways germs are spread.
- 🧼 Students will be able to list healthy habits to prevent the spread of germs.
Materials:
- 🧸 A variety of toys suitable for sharing (blocks, puzzles, cars, etc.)
- ✨ Glitter (to represent germs)
- 💧 Water
- 🧼 Soap
- 📃 Paper towels
- 🖼️ Pictures or posters illustrating healthy habits (washing hands, covering coughs, etc.)
Warm-up (5 minutes):
- 🤝 Begin by asking students what 'sharing' means.
- 🗣️ Discuss examples of sharing they've experienced (e.g., sharing toys, snacks, or crayons).
Main Instruction (20 minutes):
Part 1: Sharing with Care (10 minutes)
- 🧸 Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a set of toys.
- 🤝 Encourage students to share the toys within their groups.
- 💬 Facilitate a discussion about how sharing makes everyone feel happy and included.
Part 2: Germs are Everywhere! (10 minutes)
- ✨ Explain that germs are tiny things that can make us sick, and we can't always see them.
- 🖐️ Have each student wet their hands with water.
- 🦠 Sprinkle a small amount of glitter on one student's hands, explaining that the glitter represents germs.
- 🤝 Have that student shake hands with another student. Observe how the glitter (germs) spread. Continue this process, showing how easily germs can spread from person to person.
Part 3: Germ Busters (15 minutes)
- 🧼 Demonstrate proper handwashing techniques (wet hands, apply soap, lather for at least 20 seconds - sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice, rinse, and dry with a clean paper towel).
- 🖐️ Have students practice washing their hands.
- 🤧 Discuss other ways to prevent the spread of germs, such as covering coughs and sneezes with an elbow, using tissues, and avoiding touching their faces.
- 🖼️ Show pictures or posters illustrating these healthy habits.
Assessment:
Observe students' participation in sharing activities and their understanding of germ prevention techniques.
- ❓Ask students questions like:
- 🤔 What does it mean to share?
- 🦠 How do germs spread?
- 🧼 What are some ways to prevent germs from spreading?
