This lesson plan is designed to help Grade 8 Health students understand the difference between empathy and apathy, and to recognize these qualities in themselves and others.

Warm-up Activity (5 minutes)

Main Instruction

Part 1: Defining Empathy and Apathy (15 minutes)

• 💬 Defining Empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It involves putting yourself in someone else's shoes and recognizing their emotions.
• 😶 Defining Apathy: Apathy is a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. An apathetic person may not care about what is happening around them or how others are feeling.
• 📝 Examples: Provide clear examples of empathetic and apathetic responses:
  • Empathy: "I can see you're really upset about failing the test. It's okay to feel disappointed. How can I help?"
  • Apathy: "You failed the test? Oh well, it's just one test."
