Think-Pair-Share:
Pose the question: "What does it mean to disagree respectfully?" Have students think individually, pair with a partner to discuss, and then share their ideas with the class.
π‘ Main Instruction
1. Defining Respectful Disagreement (10 minutes)
- π Begin by defining what respectful disagreement entails. Explain that it involves expressing differing opinions while maintaining respect for the other person's viewpoints and feelings.
- π Emphasize the importance of active listening, empathy, and constructive communication.
2. Strategies for Respectful Disagreement (20 minutes)
- π£οΈ Active Listening: Discuss the importance of truly hearing and understanding the other person's perspective before responding. Model active listening techniques such as paraphrasing and asking clarifying questions.
- π Using "I" Statements: Teach students how to express their feelings and opinions using "I" statements (e.g., "I feel X when Y happens because Z"). Explain how this approach helps to avoid blaming or accusing the other person.
- π― Finding Common Ground: Encourage students to look for areas of agreement or shared values, even when they disagree on specific issues. Explain that finding common ground can help to build bridges and facilitate constructive dialogue.
- π« Avoiding Personal Attacks: Emphasize the importance of focusing on the issue at hand rather than resorting to personal attacks or insults. Explain that personal attacks can escalate conflicts and damage relationships.
3. Role-Playing Scenarios (20 minutes)
- π Divide students into small groups and provide them with role-playing scenarios that involve disagreements (e.g., differing opinions on a current event, conflicting ideas for a group project).
- βοΈ Instruct students to practice using the respectful disagreement strategies discussed earlier in the lesson. Encourage them to take turns playing different roles and to provide each other with constructive feedback.
- π After the role-playing activity, facilitate a class discussion to debrief and share insights. Ask students what they learned from the experience and how they can apply these skills in their daily lives.
β
Assessment
1. Observation (Ongoing)
- ποΈ Observe students' participation in discussions and role-playing activities to assess their understanding of respectful disagreement strategies.
2. Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
- π Ask students to write down one thing they learned about respectful disagreement and one thing they can do to improve their communication skills.
