📚 How Condensation Leads to Cloud Formation: A Grade 6 Lesson
Objectives:
- 🎯 Understand the process of condensation.
- 💧 Explain how water vapor turns into liquid water.
- ☁️ Describe how condensation leads to cloud formation.
Materials:
- 🌡️ Thermometer
- 🧊 Ice cubes 💧 A glass of water
- ✍️ Worksheet (provided below)
☀️ Warm-up (5 minutes)
Question: What happens to water when you boil it? Where does it go?
Answer: The water turns into steam (water vapor) and goes into the air.
☁️ Main Instruction
What is Condensation?
Condensation is the process where water vapor (a gas) changes into liquid water. This happens when the water vapor cools down.
How Does it Work?
- 🧊 Cooling: When air cools, it can hold less water vapor.
- 💧 Water Vapor to Liquid: The extra water vapor turns into tiny water droplets.
- ✨ Condensation Nuclei: These droplets need something to condense onto, like tiny dust particles in the air.
Cloud Formation:
Clouds are formed when water vapor in the air condenses to form tiny water droplets or ice crystals. These droplets or crystals gather around microscopic particles, such as dust, salt, or smoke, in the atmosphere. When billions of these droplets or crystals come together, they become visible as a cloud.
Experiment: Making a Cloud in a Jar
- 🧪 Materials: A clear jar with a lid, hot water, ice cubes, hairspray.
- ♨️ Step 1: Pour a bit of hot water into the jar and swirl it around.
- 💨 Step 2: Quickly spray a tiny bit of hairspray into the jar (this provides condensation nuclei).
- 🧊 Step 3: Place the lid upside down on the jar and put ice cubes on top of the lid.
- ☁️ Step 4: Watch as a cloud forms inside the jar!
Explanation: The hot water creates water vapor. The hairspray provides particles for the water vapor to condense on. The ice cools the water vapor, causing it to condense and form a cloud.
