π Introduction: What is Sand?
Sand is made up of tiny, tiny pieces of rocks, shells, and even sometimes bits of sea creatures! It's the stuff that makes up beaches, deserts, and even the bottom of some rivers.
- ποΈ Beaches: Coastal areas where waves deposit sand.
- ποΈ Deserts: Vast, sandy landscapes.
- ποΈ Riverbeds: Sand and sediment found at the bottom of rivers.
π§ͺ Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- π Identify sand as a collection of small particles.
- π Describe the origins of sand (rocks, shells).
- π¬ Observe and compare different types of sand using simple tools.
- ποΈ Engage in hands-on exploration and observation.
π Materials
- πΊ Different types of sand (beach sand, play sand, etc.)
- π Magnifying glasses
- π White paper or dark construction paper
- π₯ Small spoons or scoops
- πΆ Small containers or cups
- π§ Water
βοΈ Warm-up (5 mins)
Sand Brainstorm:
- π§ Ask students what they already know about sand. Where have they seen it? What do they do with it?
- βοΈ Write their ideas on the board.
π¬ Main Instruction (20 mins)
1. Sand Observation:
- π₯ Give each student a small amount of each type of sand in separate containers.
- π Have them use magnifying glasses to observe the sand on white or dark paper.
- π Ask questions like:
- π What colors do you see?
- β¨ Do the grains look the same or different?
- π Can you see any tiny shells or rocks?
2. Sand and Water Experiment:
- π§ Add a little water to each type of sand.
- β What happens when the sand gets wet? Does it stick together? Does the water change color?
- π Record their observations.
3. Sand Origins Discussion:
- π Explain that sand comes from bigger rocks that have been broken down over a long time by wind and water.
- π Show pictures of rocks being worn down by waves.
- π Explain that some sand is also made from tiny pieces of shells from sea creatures.
π Assessment (10 mins)
Sand Comparison Chart:
Create a simple chart where students can record their observations about each type of sand.

Discussion Questions:
- π€ What did you learn about sand today?
- β Where does sand come from?
- π‘ Can you name different places where we can find sand?
