📚 What are Things Made Of?
Everything around us is made of matter. Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space. That includes your toys, your food, and even the air you breathe!
⚛️ Atoms: The Tiny Building Blocks
Matter is made of incredibly tiny things called atoms. Imagine LEGO bricks, but much, much smaller. Atoms are so small, you can't even see them with a regular microscope!
- 🔍 What are atoms made of? Atoms themselves are made of even smaller particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.
- 💡 Protons have a positive charge (+).
- ⚡ Electrons have a negative charge (-).
- Neutrons have no charge (they are neutral).
🧪 Elements: Different Kinds of Atoms
An element is a substance that is made of only one kind of atom. For example, gold is an element made only of gold atoms. Oxygen is an element made only of oxygen atoms.
- 🌍 Examples of elements: Hydrogen (H), Helium (He), Oxygen (O), Carbon (C), and Iron (Fe).
- 🎨 The Periodic Table: Scientists organize all the known elements in a chart called the Periodic Table of Elements.
- 📝 Each element has a unique symbol (like H for hydrogen).
🧬 Molecules: Atoms Stick Together
Atoms can join together to form molecules. It's like LEGO bricks snapping together to make bigger structures.
- 💧 Water (H₂O): A water molecule is made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. That's why it's called H₂O!
- 💨 Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): A carbon dioxide molecule is made of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Plants use this to make food!
- 🔗 Molecules can be simple (like water) or very complex (like DNA, which makes up our genes!).
🧱 Compounds: Different Elements Combined
A compound is a substance made of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together. Water (H₂O) and Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) are examples of compounds.
- 🧂 Salt (NaCl): Table salt is a compound made of sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl).
- 🍬 Sugar (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁): Sugar is a compound made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
- 💡 The properties of a compound are different from the properties of the elements it's made of. For example, sodium is a metal that explodes in water, and chlorine is a poisonous gas, but together they make table salt!
🧮 States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas
Matter can exist in different states, depending on how the atoms and molecules are arranged and how much energy they have. The three common states are:
- 🧊 Solid: Atoms and molecules are tightly packed together. Examples: ice, wood, rock.
- 🌊 Liquid: Atoms and molecules are close together but can move around. Examples: water, juice, milk.
- ☁️ Gas: Atoms and molecules are far apart and move around freely. Examples: air, oxygen, helium.
✏️ Quick Recap:
