Clouds are collections of tiny water droplets or ice crystals floating in the air. They form when warm, moist air rises and cools. As the air cools, water vapor condenses around tiny particles like dust or pollen in the air, forming these visible masses.
People have been looking at clouds and wondering about them for centuries! But it wasn't until the early 19th century that a scientist named Luke Howard came up with a system for classifying clouds based on their appearance. His system is still used today!
Luke Howard identified three basic cloud forms: cirrus (thin and wispy), cumulus (puffy and cotton-like), and stratus (flat and layered). These can be combined to describe even more types:
