📚 What Makes a Sound High or Low?
Imagine you have a jump rope. If you shake it super fast, it makes lots of waves really close together. If you shake it slowly, the waves are big and far apart. Sound works in a similar way!
🎵 Frequency: The Key to Pitch
The thing that decides if a sound is high or low is called its frequency. Frequency means how many sound waves reach your ear each second.
- 🌊 High Frequency: Think of a tiny hummingbird's wings flapping super fast. High frequency means lots of waves per second, and that makes a high-pitched sound.
- 🐻 Low Frequency: Now think of a big, slow whale singing deep under the sea. Low frequency means fewer waves per second, making a low-pitched sound.
🔢 Measuring Frequency: Hertz
We measure frequency in something called Hertz (Hz). One Hertz means one wave per second.
- 👂 Example 1: A sound of 1000 Hz means 1000 sound waves are reaching your ear every second! It sounds pretty high!
- 📢 Example 2: A sound of 100 Hz means only 100 sound waves reach your ear each second. This sounds much lower.
🎛️ How Instruments Change Pitch
Musical instruments can change the pitch (how high or low a sound is) by changing the frequency of the sound waves they make.
- 🎻 String Instruments: On a guitar or violin, tightening the strings makes them vibrate faster, creating a higher sound. Looser strings vibrate slower, making a lower sound.
- 🎺 Wind Instruments: In a flute or trumpet, changing the length of the tube changes the way the air vibrates. Shorter tubes = higher sounds, longer tubes = lower sounds.
🔊 Amplitude: Loudness vs. Pitch
It's important not to confuse pitch with loudness. Pitch is about how high or low a sound is (frequency), while loudness is about how strong the sound waves are (amplitude).
- громкоговоритель Loudness (Amplitude): A loud sound has big, strong waves, whether it's high or low.
- 🔈 Quietness (Amplitude): A quiet sound has small, gentle waves, whether it's high or low.
🧪 Extra Fun Fact:
Humans can usually hear sounds between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz! Some animals, like dogs, can hear even higher frequencies!
