Understanding plant life cycle for Grade 2 students

🌱 Objectives

• 🎯 Students will be able to identify the four main stages of the plant life cycle: seed, germination, growth, and reproduction.
• 🌱 Students will be able to describe what happens during each stage of the plant life cycle.
• 🌻 Students will be able to understand the importance of each stage for the plant's survival.

🧪 Materials

• Seeds (bean, pea, or sunflower seeds work well)
• Clear plastic cups
• Paper towels
• Water spray bottle
• Worksheet with plant life cycle diagrams (see Assessment section)
• 🖍️ Crayons or colored pencils

☀️ Warm-up (5 mins)

• 🧠 Begin by asking students what they already know about plants.
• ❓ Prompt them with questions like: “What do plants need to grow?” and “Where do plants come from?”
• 🌱 Write down their answers on the board.

🪴 Main Instruction

1. 🌰 Stage 1: Seed

   • 🔎 Explain that the plant life cycle starts with a seed.
   • 🌍 Show students different types of seeds.
   • ✍️ Discuss what’s inside a seed (baby plant and food).

2. 💦 Stage 2: Germination

   • 🧪 Explain that germination is when the seed starts to sprout.
   • 💧 Demonstrate by placing seeds between damp paper towels in a clear cup.
   • ⏰ Observe daily and discuss what is happening.

3. 🌳 Stage 3: Growth

   • ☀️ Once the seedling has roots and a stem, it grows into a plant.
   • 🍃 Talk about what plants need to grow (sunlight, water, soil, air).
   • 📏 Discuss how plants get bigger over time.

4. 🌸 Stage 4: Reproduction

   • 🐝 Explain that adult plants make new seeds through flowers and pollination.
   • 🌼 Show pictures of different flowers and fruits.
   • 🔄 Discuss how the cycle starts again with new seeds.

📝 Assessment

• ✅ Provide students with a worksheet showing the four stages of the plant life cycle.
• 🖍️ Ask them to label each stage and draw a picture representing what happens during that stage.
• ❓ Review the answers as a class to reinforce understanding.
