📚 What is Condensation?
Condensation is when a gas, like water vapor (which is water in the air), changes into a liquid. Think about when you take a cold can of soda out of the fridge on a warm day. Tiny water droplets form on the outside of the can. That's condensation!
🎯 Learning Objectives
- 💧 Understand that condensation is a change from gas to liquid.
- 🧊 Identify examples of condensation in everyday life.
- 🌡️ Explain that cooling is necessary for condensation to occur.
🎒 Materials
- 🧊 A glass of ice water
- 🧽 A clean cloth
- 🌡️ Thermometer (optional)
- whiteboard or chart paper
- markers
☀️ Warm-up (5 mins)
Ask students if they've ever seen water droplets form on a cold object. Where did the water come from?
🧪 Main Instruction
- Show the students a glass of ice water. Ask them to observe what happens to the outside of the glass.
- Explain that the water droplets are formed because of condensation. Water vapor in the air is cooling down and changing into liquid water.
- Discuss other examples of condensation: morning dew on grass, steam on a bathroom mirror after a shower, or fog forming on a cold day.
- Explain that condensation happens when warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface. The warm air cools down, and the water vapor turns into liquid water.
📝 Assessment
Ask the students to explain what condensation is in their own words. Have them draw a picture of an example of condensation they have seen.
🤔 More Examples
- 🪞 Steam on a mirror after a shower
- 🌱 Dew on grass in the morning
- 🚗 Fog on car windows
💡 Fun Fact
Did you know that clouds are formed by condensation? Water vapor in the air cools and condenses around tiny particles, forming clouds!
✅ Practice Quiz
- What is condensation?
- Give an example of condensation you see in your everyday life.
- What needs to happen for condensation to occur?
- Is condensation a solid, liquid, or gas?
- Where does the water come from that forms on a cold glass?
- Why do you see condensation on a mirror after a shower?
- Does condensation happen when it is hot or cold?
