📚 Topic Summary

The Earth is always spinning, like a top! This spinning is called rotation. Because the Earth is round, only one side can face the sun at a time. The side facing the sun has daylight, and the side facing away from the sun has nighttime. As the Earth spins, different parts of it move into and out of the sunlight, giving us day and night. It takes Earth about 24 hours to make one complete rotation, which is why we have a 24-hour day.

✍️ Part A: Vocabulary

Match the words with their definitions:

  1. Sun
  2. Earth
  3. Rotation
  4. Day
  5. Night
  1. A. The time when it is dark.
  2. B. The star that gives us light and heat.
  3. C. The planet we live on.
  4. D. The spinning of Earth on its axis.
  5. E. The time when it is light.

✏️ Part B: Fill in the Blanks

Use the words sun, Earth, light, and dark to fill in the blanks.

The ________ is a big star that shines brightly. The ________ rotates, causing day and night. When our side of the Earth faces the sun, we have ________. When our side of the Earth faces away from the sun, we have ________.

🤔 Part C: Critical Thinking

If Earth stopped spinning, what do you think would happen to day and night?
