The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth, some of it is absorbed and warms the planet, and the rest is radiated back into space. However, certain gases in the atmosphere, known as greenhouse gases, trap some of this outgoing radiation, preventing it from escaping into space. This trapped radiation warms the atmosphere, much like the glass roof of a greenhouse traps heat inside.
