📚 Quick Study Guide: Semicolon Usage
- 🔗 A semicolon (;) is used to join two or more independent clauses that are closely related in meaning.
- 💡 An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence.
- ✍️ When using a semicolon to join independent clauses directly, do NOT use a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
- 🧐 You can also use a semicolon to join independent clauses when the second clause begins with a conjunctive adverb (e.g., however, therefore, moreover, consequently, indeed, in fact, meanwhile, nonetheless, thus) or a transitional phrase. In this case, the conjunctive adverb or transitional phrase is followed by a comma. Example: She studied diligently; therefore, she passed the exam with flying colors.
- 🚫 Avoid using a comma splice (joining two independent clauses with only a comma) or a run-on sentence (joining two independent clauses with no punctuation). A semicolon is often the correct solution!
