- 💡 What are Transition Words? These are words or phrases that connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs, making your writing flow smoothly. They signal relationships between ideas (e.g., addition, contrast, cause/effect, sequence).
- 🔗 Types of Transition Words:
- ➕ Addition: furthermore, moreover, in addition, besides, also
- ⚖️ Contrast: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, in contrast, conversely
- ➡️ Cause/Effect: therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence
- ⏳ Sequence: first, next, then, finally, meanwhile, subsequently
- 🔍 Example/Illustration: for example, for instance, specifically, namely
- 📝 Comma Rule 1: Introductory Transition Words/Phrases. Always place a comma after an introductory transition word or phrase that starts a sentence.
- ✅ Example: However, the weather improved.
- ❌ Incorrect: However the weather improved.
- ↔️ Comma Rule 2: Transition Words Between Independent Clauses. When a transition word connects two independent clauses, it is usually preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma.
