π Main Instruction: Mastering Adjectives
What are Adjectives?
- π Explain that adjectives are words that describe nouns (people, places, things, animals).
- β Ask: "What kind?" or "How many?" to find adjectives.
- π Show an apple. Ask: "What kind of apple is this?" (Red, shiny, round).
- πΎ Show a dog. Ask: "What kind of dog?" (Big, fluffy, friendly).
π« Common Mistake 1: Using "More" or "Most" with -er/-est
Explain that for most short adjectives (one or two syllables), we add -er to compare two things and -est to compare three or more things. We don't use "more" or "most" with these words.
- β Incorrect: "The dog is more big than the cat."
- β
Correct: "The dog is bigger than the cat."
- β Incorrect: "She is the most tallest girl in the class."
- β
Correct: "She is the tallest girl in the class."
- π£οΈ Practice: Give examples and have students correct them orally.
- π Activity: "Adjective Ladder" - Students write an adjective, then its -er form, then its -est form (e.g., tall -> taller -> tallest).
π§ Common Mistake 2: Adjective Order
Explain that adjectives usually come before the noun they describe.
- β Incorrect: "I saw a house blue."
- β
Correct: "I saw a blue house."
- β Incorrect: "She has hair long and brown."
- β
Correct: "She has long, brown hair."
