Today, we're going to become poetry detectives and learn about something special in poems called a rhyming couplet!
What is a Rhyming Couplet?
- ๐ก A couplet is simply two lines of poetry. Think of it like a pair, just like a pair of shoes!
- โญ A rhyming couplet means those two lines rhyme with each other. The last word of the first line rhymes with the last word of the second line.

It's a short, sweet, rhyming pair!
How to Find Rhyming Couplets
Let's use our super listening ears and keen eyes to find them!
- ๐ Step 1: Read the poem aloud. Listen carefully to the sounds of the words.
- ๐ Step 2: Look at the end of each line. What are the last words?
- ๐ง Step 3: Say the last two words of the lines. Do they rhyme? If they do, you've found a rhyming couplet!
- ๐ Example 1:
"The cat sat on the mat.
He saw a little rat."
(Mat and Rat rhyme! This is a rhyming couplet.) - ๐ Example 2:
"I like to play with my toy.
It fills my heart with joy."
(Toy and Joy rhyme! Another rhyming couplet!)

Activity: Couplet Creations!
- ๐งโ๐ซ Give each student an index card.
- โ๏ธ Ask them to write one line of a poem that ends with a simple word (e.g., 'tree', 'fun', 'blue').
- ๐ค Have students swap cards with a partner.
- โ๏ธ Their partner must then write a second line that rhymes with the first, creating a rhyming couplet!
- ๐ Encourage students to draw a picture to go with their couplet.
