π Topic Summary: Understanding Author's Purpose
As 5th-grade readers, understanding why an author writes a story or an article is a superpower! This "why" is called the author's purpose. Most of the time, authors write for one of three main reasons, which we can remember with the acronym P.I.E.:
- π£οΈ Persuade: The author wants to convince you to believe something or do something. Think of an ad telling you to buy a certain toy!
- π° Inform: The author wants to teach you facts or give you information about a topic. A textbook about dinosaurs is a great example.
- π Entertain: The author wants to tell a fun story, make you laugh, or help you escape into another world. A fantasy novel or a funny comic strip fits here.
Learning to spot the author's purpose helps you read smarter, understand deeper, and even predict what kind of information you'll find in a text!
