π Quick Study Guide: Subordinating Conjunctions
- π― What are Subordinating Conjunctions? They are words that connect a dependent (or subordinate) clause to an independent (or main) clause in a sentence.
- π€ What Do They Do? They show a relationship between the two clauses, such as time (when, while, before, after, until), cause and effect (because, since, so that), condition (if, unless), contrast (although, though, even though), or place (where, wherever).
- β¨ Common Examples: Some of the most frequently used subordinating conjunctions include: after, although, as, because, before, if, since, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, wherever, while.
- ποΈ Complex Sentences: When you use a subordinating conjunction, you create a complex sentence. This sentence type has at least one independent clause (can stand alone) and at least one dependent clause (cannot stand alone).
- π¦ Punctuation Rule: If the dependent clause comes before the independent clause, you need a comma after the dependent clause. If the independent clause comes first, you usually don't need a comma.
Example 1: Because it was raining, we stayed inside.
Example 2: We stayed inside because it was raining.
