📚 Quick Study Guide: Commas in Compound Sentences
- ✨ A compound sentence connects two or more complete thoughts, also known as independent clauses.
- 🔗 An independent clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that can stand alone as a complete sentence.
- 🤝 To join two independent clauses in a compound sentence, you need two things: a comma (,) AND a coordinating conjunction.
- ✍️ The most common coordinating conjunctions are often remembered with the acronym FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
- ⚠️ The comma always comes BEFORE the coordinating conjunction. For example: "I like pizza, but my brother prefers pasta."
- ❌ Do NOT use a comma when joining two verbs or two nouns with a coordinating conjunction if there is only one subject. For example: "She sings and dances." (Not a compound sentence).
