Understanding the main idea is like finding the core message or central point an author wants to convey in a piece of writing. In Grade 6 ELA, you'll often encounter informational texts – these are non-fiction pieces like articles, reports, or essays that aim to educate you about a specific topic. To identify the main idea, look beyond the small details and ask yourself: 'What is this text mostly about?' Often, the main idea is stated directly in a topic sentence, usually at the beginning or end of a paragraph. Other times, you'll need to infer it by noticing what all the supporting details point to.
