🧠 Quick Study Guide: Active & Passive Voice
- 💡 Active Voice: The subject performs the action. It's generally clearer, more direct, and stronger. Example: The student wrote the essay. (The student performs the action of writing).
- 🎯 Passive Voice: The subject receives the action. It often uses a form of 'to be' (is, was, were, been) followed by a past participle verb, and sometimes 'by' + the agent. Example: The essay was written by the student. (The essay receives the action of being written).
- ✍️ When to use Active: Most of the time! It makes your writing more concise, engaging, and easier to understand.
- 🧐 When to use Passive: When the doer of the action is unknown, unimportant, or when you want to emphasize the action or the recipient rather than the doer. Example: The ancient city was discovered in 1872. (Who discovered it isn't the main focus).
- 🛠️ Converting Active to Passive: Make the object of the active sentence the new subject. Use the correct form of 'to be' + the past participle of the main verb. Optionally, add 'by' + the original subject.
- 🔄 Converting Passive to Active: Identify the agent (the 'doer' of the action, often after 'by'). Make this agent the new subject. Make the original subject the new object. Adjust the verb tense accordingly.
- ✅ Key Tip for Grade 8: While both voices are correct, aim to use active voice more often in your essays and reports for better clarity and impact!
