📝 Quick Study Guide: Pronoun Agreement
- 💡 A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun (the antecedent). For correct pronoun agreement, the pronoun must match its antecedent in number (singular/plural) and gender (masculine/feminine/neuter).
- 🔢 Singular Antecedents take singular pronouns. Examples: *The student finished his (or her) homework.* *Each of the girls brought her own book.*
- 👥 Plural Antecedents take plural pronouns. Examples: *The students finished their homework.* *Both dogs wagged their tails.*
- 🤔 Indefinite Pronouns: Some are always singular (e.g., *everyone, anybody, no one, somebody, each, either, neither*). They take singular pronouns. Example: *Everyone should bring their (or his/her) own lunch.* (Note: 'their' is often accepted informally for singular indefinite pronouns, but formally, 'his or her' is preferred or rephrasing).
- 🔗 Other indefinite pronouns are always plural (e.g., *both, few, many, several*). They take plural pronouns. Example: *Both of the runners finished their race.*
- ⚖️ Some indefinite pronouns can be singular or plural depending on the phrase that follows them (e.g., *all, any, most, none, some*). Example: *Some of the water spilled out of its container.* (singular) *Some of the students finished their projects.* (plural)
- 🤝 Compound Subjects: If two singular antecedents are joined by *and*, they take a plural pronoun. Example: *Tom and Jerry love their cheese.* If joined by *or* or *nor*, the pronoun agrees with the antecedent closer to it. Example: *Neither the teacher nor the students submitted their assignments.*
