π Teaching Early Readers: Words vs. Pictures
This lesson plan is designed to help early readers distinguish between words and pictures, a foundational skill for literacy development.
π― Objectives
- πΌοΈ Students will be able to identify words as distinct from pictures.
- π Students will understand that words represent spoken language.
- βοΈ Students will be able to point to words while reading aloud.
π Materials
- π A variety of picture books with clear text.
- ποΈ Markers or crayons.
- π Worksheets with words and pictures (see assessment section).
- βοΈ Scissors and glue (optional).
βοΈ Warm-up (5 minutes)
- π£οΈ Word Sound Game: Say a simple word (e.g., 'cat,' 'dog') and have students repeat it. Then, show a picture of the same object. Discuss how the word sounds different from the picture.
- π Introduce the Concept: Explain that words are made of letters and we read them, while pictures show us what something looks like.
π Main Instruction (20 minutes)
- π Guided Reading: Read aloud from a picture book, pointing to each word as you go. Emphasize that you are reading the words, not the pictures.
- π€ Interactive Activity: Choose a page with both words and pictures. Ask students to identify which parts are words and which are pictures. Have them point to the words as you read them again.
- βοΈ Word and Picture Sort: Provide a worksheet with individual words and pictures. Have the students cut and paste them into two columns labeled 'Words' and 'Pictures.'
β
Assessment
Use the following activities to assess students' understanding.
Worksheet Activities:
- βοΈ Circle the Words: Provide a page with mixed words and pictures. Ask students to circle all the words.
- ποΈ Color the Pictures: Provide a similar page and ask students to color all the pictures.
- βοΈ Cut and Paste: Provide a worksheet with words and pictures. Have students cut out each item and paste them into the correct category (words or pictures).
Reading Aloud:
- π£οΈ Individual Reading: Have each student choose a simple book and read aloud. Observe if they are pointing to the words as they read and if they can distinguish between reading the words and describing the pictures.
