Steps to Identify Nouns: A First Grade ELA Lesson

📚 What is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Think of nouns as the building blocks of sentences – they tell us who or what we're talking about!

• 🧑‍🏫 Person: This could be a teacher, a doctor, a friend, or even you!
• 📍 Place: Think of places like your school, your home, a park, or even a country.
• 🧸 Thing: This can be anything you can touch or see, like a book, a toy, or a tree.
• ✨ Idea: These are things you can't touch but you can think about, like happiness, love, or friendship.

🎯 Objectives

• ✅ Students will be able to define a noun.
• 👁️ Students will be able to identify nouns in a sentence.
• 💬 Students will be able to give examples of nouns in different categories (person, place, thing, idea).

• 📃 Whiteboard or chart paper
• 🖍️ Markers or pens

☀️ Warm-up (5 minutes)

Play a quick game of "I Spy" focusing on nouns in the classroom.

• 🔎 Teacher: "I spy with my little eye, something that is a… book!"
• 🧑‍🎓 Students: "Book!"
• Repeat with other nouns like "chair", "desk", "window", etc.

✏️ Main Instruction (20 minutes)

1. Introduce Nouns:
• 🗣️ Explain what a noun is using simple language and examples (as outlined above).
• ✍️ Write examples of nouns on the board, categorizing them as person, place, thing, or idea.
2. Guided Practice:
• 📖 Read a short story aloud.
• ✋ As you read, pause and ask students to identify nouns they hear in the story.
• 💬 Write the identified nouns on the board under the correct category.
3. Independent Practice:
• ✂️ Distribute the noun worksheets.
• ✏️ Instruct students to circle or highlight the nouns in each sentence.
• 🚶‍♀️ Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and answer questions.

• 🗣️ Have students share their answers from the worksheet.
• ❓ Ask individual students to give examples of nouns in each category.
