๐ Understanding Alligator Mouth Symbols for Comparing Numbers
This lesson plan will help you teach first-grade students how to compare numbers using alligator mouth symbols (> and <).
๐ฏ Objectives
- ๐ข Students will be able to identify the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols.
- ๐ Students will be able to use alligator mouth symbols to compare two numbers up to 20.
- ๐ค Students will be able to explain why they chose a particular symbol when comparing numbers.
๐ Materials
- ๐ผ๏ธ Number cards (0-20)
- ๐ Alligator mouth symbol cards (>, <, =)
- โ๏ธ Whiteboard or chart paper
- ๐๏ธ Markers or crayons
- ๐จ๏ธ Worksheet with comparison problems
โ๏ธ Warm-up (5 minutes)
- ๐ฃ๏ธ Count aloud as a class from 1 to 20.
- ๐๏ธ Show different numbers of fingers and have students say whether the number is 'more' or 'less' than a given number (e.g., โShow 3 fingers. Is 3 more or less than 5?โ).
๐ Main Instruction (20 minutes)
- Introduce the Alligator:
- ๐ Explain that the alligator is always hungry and wants to eat the bigger number.
- ๐ฃ๏ธ Show the > and < symbols and explain that the open mouth of the alligator (the wide part of the symbol) faces the bigger number.
- ๐ The point (narrow part) of the symbol always points to the smaller number.
- Demonstrate with Number Cards:
- ๐๏ธ Place two number cards (e.g., 7 and 4) on the board.
- ๐ Ask, โWhich number is bigger? Which number does the alligator want to eat?โ
- โ๏ธ Place the > symbol between the numbers: $7 > 4$ (7 is greater than 4).
- ๐ Repeat with different number combinations, including examples where the first number is smaller (e.g., 2 and 9) and requires the < symbol: $2 < 9$ (2 is less than 9).
- Introduce the Equal Sign:
- โ๏ธ Introduce the = symbol and explain that it means the two numbers are the same.
- ๐๏ธ Use number cards that are the same (e.g., 5 and 5) and show that $5 = 5$.
- Guided Practice:
- ๐ค Have students work in pairs.
- ๐ข Give each pair a set of number cards and alligator mouth symbols.
- โ Call out two numbers (e.g., โ12 and 8โ).
- ๐ Have the students arrange the number cards and the correct alligator mouth symbol between them.
- โ
Check their work as a class.
โ
Assessment (10 minutes)
- ๐จ๏ธ Distribute a worksheet with comparison problems. For example:
- ๐ 9 ___ 5
- ๐ 3 ___ 11
- ๐ 15 ___ 15
- ๐ 1 ___ 6
- ๐ 10 ___ 2
- ๐ 4 ___ 14
- ๐ 7 ___ 7
- ๐๏ธ Have students fill in the blanks with the correct symbol (>, <, or =).
- ๐ Collect the worksheets and review student understanding.
