- π‘ Students will be able to apply these criteria to determine if a website is trustworthy.
- π Students will be able to explain why it is important to evaluate websites before using information from them.
π§° Materials
- π Computer with internet access
- π Worksheet (provided below)
- βοΈ Pencils
- whiteboard or projector
warm-up (5 minutes)
Begin by asking students where they typically get their information online. Discuss the different types of websites they use (e.g., news sites, social media, educational sites). Ask them if they always believe everything they read online and why or why not.
π» Main Instruction (30 minutes)
- Introduce Website Evaluation Criteria:
- βοΈ Authority: Who created the website? Are they an expert on the topic?
- π Currency: When was the website last updated? Is the information current?
- π― Objectivity: Is the website biased? Does it present information fairly?
- π Accuracy: Is the information accurate and supported by evidence?
- π‘οΈ Purpose: Why was the website created? To inform, persuade, or sell something?
- Model Website Evaluation:
Choose two websites β one credible and one not credible β and evaluate them using the criteria above. For example:
- β Credible Website: A government website (e.g., EPA.gov) providing environmental information.
- β Non-Credible Website: A personal blog with unsupported claims about a scientific topic.
Walk students through the process of evaluating each website, explaining your reasoning for each criterion.
- Guided Practice:
Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a different website to evaluate. Have them use the worksheet to record their findings and discuss their conclusions with their group members.
π Assessment (10 minutes)
- Class Discussion:
Bring the class back together and have each group share their website evaluation findings. Discuss any discrepancies or challenges they encountered during the evaluation process.
- Individual Reflection:
Have students write a short paragraph reflecting on what they learned about evaluating websites and why it is important. Collect their reflections for assessment.
