📚 Quick Study Guide

  • ⚖️ Balanced Forces: When forces are equal in size and opposite in direction, they cancel each other out. There is no movement when forces are balanced.
  • ➡️ Unbalanced Forces: When forces are NOT equal in size and opposite in direction, they do NOT cancel each other out. The object moves in the direction of the larger force.
  • Net Force: The overall force acting on an object. To find the net force: * If forces are in the same direction, add them together. * If forces are in opposite directions, subtract the smaller force from the larger force.
  • 📏 Units: Forces are measured in Newtons (N).
  • 🍎 Example: If you push a box with 10N of force to the right, and your friend pushes it with 5N of force to the left, the net force is 5N to the right (10N - 5N = 5N). The box will move to the right!

🤔 Practice Quiz

  1. Which of the following describes balanced forces?
    1. Equal forces acting in the same direction.
    2. Unequal forces acting in the same direction.
    3. Equal forces acting in opposite directions.
    4. Unequal forces acting in opposite directions.
  2. What happens to an object when balanced forces act upon it?
    1. It starts to move.
    2. It speeds up.
    3. It remains at rest or continues moving at a constant velocity.
    4. It changes direction.
  3. Which of the following is an example of unbalanced forces?
    1. A book resting on a table.
    2. A car moving at a constant speed on a straight road.
    3. A tug-of-war where one team is pulling harder than the other.
    4. Two people pushing equally hard on a wall.
  4. What is the net force on an object if a force of 20N is applied to the right and a force of 10N is applied to the left?
    1. 10N to the left
    2. 30N to the left
    3. 10N to the right
    4. 30N to the right
  5. If the net force on an object is zero, what can you conclude?
    1. The object is accelerating.
    2. The forces acting on the object are unbalanced.
    3. The object is at rest or moving at a constant velocity.
    4. The object is changing direction.
  6. Two people are pushing a box. One person pushes with a force of 15N, and the other pushes with a force of 20N. Both are pushing in the same direction. What is the net force on the box?
    1. 5N
    2. 17.5N
    3. 35N
    4. 300N
  7. A parachutist is falling downwards. Gravity is pulling them down with 500N, and air resistance is pushing them up with 500N. What is the net force on the parachutist?
    1. 1000N downwards
    2. 1000N upwards
    3. 0N
    4. Cannot be determined
