๐ Introduction to Informational Text for Kindergarten
This lesson plan is designed to introduce kindergarten students to informational text. It focuses on identifying key features and understanding that informational texts teach us about real things.
๐ฏ Objectives
- ๐ Students will be able to identify a basic informational text.
- ๐ Students will understand that informational texts provide factual information.
- ๐ฃ๏ธ Students will be able to share one fact learned from the informational text.
๐งช Materials
- ๐ A short, simple informational text on a topic interesting to kindergarteners (e.g., animals, plants). A printable PDF works great!
- ๐๏ธ Crayons or colored pencils.
- ๐ Worksheet with a picture from the text and space to draw/write a fact.
โ๏ธ Warm-up (5 minutes)
-
๐ก Begin by asking students what they already know about the topic of the informational text.
๐ฃ๏ธ Encourage sharing and discussion to activate prior knowledge.
โ๏ธ Main Instruction (20 minutes)
- ๐ Reading the Text: Read the informational text aloud to the students. Use expressive reading to keep them engaged.
- ๐ Identifying Key Features: Point out features like headings, pictures, and captions. Explain that these help us learn.
- ๐ฌ Discussing Facts: After reading, ask questions to check for understanding: "What did we learn about...?" "What is one new thing you learned?"
- ๐จ Worksheet Activity: Have students complete the worksheet. They can draw a picture related to a fact they learned and/or write (or have you write for them) a sentence about the fact.
๐ Assessment
Observe student participation during discussions and review their completed worksheets. A simple checklist can be used to note whether each student can identify the text as informational and share a learned fact.
๐ Extension Activities
- ๐ Provide a variety of informational texts in the classroom library for students to explore independently.
- ๐ฑ Encourage students to bring in informational texts from home to share with the class.
๐ Example Informational Text (Adaptable PDF Content)
Title: All About Apples
Apples are fruits that grow on trees. They come in many colors, like red, green, and yellow. Apples are a healthy snack. You can eat them raw or use them to make apple juice and apple pie!
(Include a picture of an apple tree with different colored apples)
Caption: Apples grow on trees and are yummy to eat!
๐งฎ Differentiation
- โ For struggling learners: Provide one-on-one support during the worksheet activity. Simplify the text further.
- ๐ For advanced learners: Encourage them to research additional facts about the topic and share them with the class.
