Imagine you have a delicious pizza! ๐ That whole pizza is like the number 1. Now, if you cut that pizza into slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza. A fraction shows how many parts of the whole you have.
Let's say you cut the pizza into 4 equal slices. Each slice is $\frac{1}{4}$ (one-fourth) of the pizza. The bottom number (4) tells you how many total slices there are, and the top number (1) tells you how many slices you have. If you eat one slice, you've eaten $\frac{1}{4}$ of the whole pizza. If you eat all 4 slices, you've eaten $\frac{4}{4}$, which is the whole pizza! ($$\frac{4}{4} = 1$$)
If you and a friend each eat one slice of the 4-slice pizza, together you've eaten $\frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{4}$ of the pizza. You add the numerators (top numbers) but keep the denominator (bottom number) the same.
If you start with $\frac{3}{4}$ of the pizza and eat one slice ($\frac{1}{4}$), you're left with $\frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{4}$ of the pizza.
