📚 What is a Foul Ball?
In baseball, a foul ball is a batted ball that lands outside of fair territory. Fair territory is the area between the first and third base lines, extending from home plate all the way to the outfield fence. If any part of the ball hits fair territory, it's considered a fair ball, otherwise, it's foul.
📍Determining Foul Territory
Imagine two lines extending from home plate, one going past first base and the other going past third base. These are the foul lines. Everything outside these lines is foul territory.
🤔 When is a Batted Ball Ruled Foul?
- 🧱 If the ball first lands in foul territory between home plate and first base, or between home plate and third base, it's a foul ball.
- 🛬 If the ball lands in fair territory, but then rolls or is blown into foul territory before reaching first or third base, it is still considered a fair ball.
- ☝️ If the ball settles on foul territory or is touched by a fielder while in foul territory, before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball.
- ⛰️ If the ball hits the batter while they are in the batter's box, it's a foul ball.
📜 Consequences of a Foul Ball
- strikes: A foul ball counts as a strike, but a batter cannot be struck out on a foul ball (unless it's a foul tip caught by the catcher with two strikes).
- 🏃 Runners: Runners cannot advance on a foul ball. They must return to their original base.
- 🚫 Dead Ball: After a foul ball is called, the ball is dead, meaning play stops until the pitcher is ready to deliver the next pitch.
💡Special Scenarios
- 🧤 Foul Tip: A foul tip is a batted ball that goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catcher's glove and is legally caught. It's a strike, and the ball is live.
- 💥 Bunt: If a batter bunts the ball foul with two strikes, they are out.
