π©βπ« Core Lesson: Unpacking Singular and Plural Verbs
Hello, young language explorers! Today, we're going to learn a super important secret about words that show action β verbs! Verbs are like the engines of our sentences, telling us what someone or something is doing. But guess what? Sometimes verbs change their look depending on who or what is doing the action!
π What Are Verbs? Action Words!
- πββοΈ Verbs are words that tell us what a person, animal, or thing is doing. Think about running, jumping, eating, sleeping, or singing!
- π‘ They make our sentences exciting and tell a story.
π§ Singular Verbs for One!
When just one person or one thing is doing the action, we use a special kind of verb called a singular verb. Often, for verbs in the present tense, we add an 's' to the end!
- π± The cat runs fast. (One cat)
- π§ She sings a happy song. (One girl)
- π¦ He eats an apple. (One boy)
- βοΈ The sun shines brightly. (One sun)
π₯ Plural Verbs for Many!
But when more than one person or thing is doing the action, our verb changes to a plural verb! We usually don't add an 's' to these verbs in the present tense.
- πΎ The cats run fast. (Many cats)
- π©βπ§βπ¦ They sing happy songs. (Many people)
- π We eat apples. (Many people)
- β The stars shine brightly. (Many stars)
βοΈ Special Verb Helpers: 'Is' vs. 'Are'
These two words are super common! Remember this easy rule:
- β Use 'is' when there is ONE! (e.g., The dog is happy. She is playing.)
- β Use 'are' when there are MANY! (e.g., The dogs are happy. They are playing.)
π Special Verb Helpers: 'Has' vs. 'Have'
Another pair of helpers!
- πββοΈ Use 'has' when ONE person or thing owns something. (e.g., He has a red ball. The bird has blue feathers.)
- π€ Use 'have' when MANY people or things own something. Also, 'I' and 'you' always use 'have'! (e.g., They have red balls. We have blue feathers. I have a book. You have a pencil.)
π°οΈ Special Verb Helpers: 'Was' vs. 'Were' (Past Tense)
These tell us what happened in the past!
- β³ Use 'was' for ONE in the past. (e.g., She was at the park. The cookie was delicious.)
- π Use 'were' for MANY in the past. Also, 'you' always uses 'were'! (e.g., They were at the park. The cookies were delicious. You were kind.)
